Voices
Overview
Section titled “Overview”Every track has a voice — the sound engine that produces audio when a step triggers. INBOIL includes drum, synth, and sampler voices. Drum and synth voices are synthesized in real-time; the Sampler plays back audio samples with multi-sample zone mapping and 8-voice polyphony.
Select a track and use the Dock panel to edit its voice parameters:
Drum Voices
Section titled “Drum Voices”All drum voices share a common synthesis engine with four parameter groups: OSC (tone oscillator), NOISE, METAL (metallic oscillator), and AMP.
| Label | Voice | Character |
|---|---|---|
| 909K | 909 Kick | Punchy analog kick |
| 808K | 808 Kick | Deep sub bass kick |
| SNARE | Snare | Noise + tone snare |
| CLAP | Clap | Layered handclap (burst mode) |
| C.HH | Closed HH | Short metallic hat — chokes open hat |
| O.HH | Open HH | Ringing metallic hat |
| CYM | Cymbal | 606-style noise+sine through BP filter |
| TOM | Tom | Pitched drum |
| RIM | Rimshot | Sharp transient |
| BELL | Cowbell | Metallic bell |
| SHKR | Shaker | Noise-based shaker |
| FMD | FM Drum | FM percussion — 6 machines (kick/snare/metal/perc/tone/chord) |
| CRSH | Crash | Crash cymbal |
| RIDE | Ride | Ride cymbal |
Key Parameters
Section titled “Key Parameters”| Param | Group | Description |
|---|---|---|
| PSTRT / PEND | OSC | Pitch start → end (sweep range) |
| PDCY | OSC | Pitch sweep speed |
| TONE | OSC | Tone oscillator level |
| NOIS | NOISE | Noise level |
| FREQ / Q | NOISE | Noise filter frequency & resonance |
| METL / MFRQ | METAL | Metallic oscillator level & frequency |
| DCY | AMP | Amplitude decay |
| DRIV | AMP | Distortion amount |
| CLCK | AMP | Transient click |
| BRST / GAP | AMP | Burst count & gap (clap layering) |
Different drum voices use different combinations of these parameters. For example, KICK uses mainly OSC + AMP, while C.HH emphasizes METAL + NOISE.
FMD (FM Drum)
Section titled “FMD (FM Drum)”FM-based drum synthesizer with 6 switchable machine algorithms, each optimized for a different percussion type. Uses 8 macro parameters that map to FM operator ratios, modulation depths, and envelopes internally.
- MCH — Machine type: KICK / SNARE / METAL / PERC / TONE / CHORD
- CLR — Color (harmonic brightness)
- SHP — Shape (waveform character)
- SWP — Sweep (pitch envelope depth)
- CNTR — Contour (envelope curve)
- PNCH — Punch (transient attack)
- DCY — Decay
- TONE — Tone mix
21 factory presets across the 6 machine types. The TONE and CHORD machines are pitched and support piano roll input.
Synth Voices
Section titled “Synth Voices”BASS (303-style Acid Bass)
Section titled “BASS (303-style Acid Bass)”Monophonic bass synth inspired by the Roland TB-303.
- CUT — Filter cutoff
- MOD — Filter envelope depth
- RESO — Filter resonance
- DCY — Amplitude decay
- DRIV — Distortion
The BASS voice responds to slide (SLD) for portamento glides — essential for acid patterns.
BASS — Analog (Analog Bass)
Section titled “BASS — Analog (Analog Bass)”Monophonic bass synth with a simpler parameter set.
- CUT / MOD / RESO — Filter section
- DCY — Amplitude decay
LEAD (Analog Synth)
Section titled “LEAD (Analog Synth)”Monophonic lead synth with full ADSR envelope and built-in arpeggiator.
- CUT / MOD / RESO / FDCY — Filter section
- ATCK / ADCY / SUST / RLS — Amp ADSR envelope
- ARP / RATE / CHRD / AOCT — Arpeggiator (OFF / UP / DOWN / U-D / RND)
FM (4-Op FM Synth)
Section titled “FM (4-Op FM Synth)”4-operator FM synth with 8 algorithms.
FM operator routing — tap to switch algorithm
- ALG — Routing algorithm (8 patterns)
- R1–R4 — Operator frequency ratios
- L1–L4 — Operator output levels
- D1–D4 — Operator decay times
- FB — OP1 self-feedback
- ATK / REL — Carrier attack & release
- LFO — Rate, depth, waveform, destination
Poly modes: MONO / POLY 12 / WIDE 6 / UNISON
WAVE (Wavetable)
Section titled “WAVE (Wavetable)”Dual-oscillator morphing wavetable synth with unison and LFO.
Morph between waveforms: saw → square → tri → sine → pulse
- WV-A / WV-B — Wavetable position for each oscillator
- MIX — Oscillator A/B mix
- COMB — Combine mode (MIX / FM / RING)
- CUT / FMOD / RESO / FTYP — Filter (LP / HP / BP / NTCH)
- DRIV — Post-filter saturation
- UNI / SPRD / WIDE — Unison voices, detune spread, stereo width
- ATCK / DCY / SUST / RLS — Amp ADSR envelope
- LFO 1 — LFO with tempo sync
- LFO 2 — Free-running LFO
Poly modes: MONO / POLY 16 / WIDE 8 / UNISON
SMPL (Sampler)
Section titled “SMPL (Sampler)”8-voice polyphonic sample playback engine with multi-sample zone mapping.
- STRT / END — Sample start & end points
- PTCH — Pitch shift (±24 semitones)
- DCY — Amplitude decay
- REV — Reverse playback
- CHOP / MODE — Slice into 8/16/32 segments (MAP or SEQ mode)
- BPM / LOOP / STRC — BPM sync, loop, and timestretch (repitch or WSOLA)
The Sampler is a melodic voice — it supports piano roll input, transpose, and arpeggiator. Load the Grand Piano multi-sample pack for realistic piano across the full keyboard, or use vocal chops and loops for creative sampling.
See Sampler for full details.
Switching Voices
Section titled “Switching Voices”Use the Dock tabs (DRUM / SYNTH / SMPL) to change a track’s voice category, then select the specific voice. The change takes effect immediately — existing steps keep their triggers but play with the new sound.
